Therapies we help with
What is it?
Therapy helps children with special needs build skills, independence, and confidence. When therapy happens at home, your child learns in a familiar, comfortable place, and you can see their progress and practice alongside them.
ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis)
What it is
A therapy that uses positive, structured techniques to help children build communication, social, and daily living skills. At home, it can focus on everyday routines like mealtime, getting dressed, and playing with siblings.
When it may be needed
- Your child has been diagnosed with autism
- Your child has trouble communicating needs or following routines
- Your child has behaviors that make daily life or learning difficult
- Your child finds it hard to play or connect with others
How to get it
ABA is available to children with or without OPWDD approval. Children with an autism diagnosis and Medicaid can access ABA with a referral from a qualified licensed professional, such as their doctor or psychologist. If your child already has OPWDD approval, they can receive ABA too.
Speech Therapy
What it is
A therapy that helps children with talking, understanding language, expressing their needs, and social communication. It can also help with feeding and swallowing.
When it may be needed
- Your child speaks very little or is hard to understand
- Your child has trouble understanding or following directions
- Your child struggles to express wants and feelings
- Your child has difficulty chewing or swallowing
How to get it
For children with OPWDD approval, speech therapy can be provided at home through a Certified Home Health Agency (CHHA).
Occupational Therapy (OT)
What it is
A therapy that helps children build everyday skills like dressing, eating, writing, and handling sensory needs, so daily routines become easier.
When it may be needed
- Your child has trouble with buttons, zippers, utensils, or holding a pencil
- Your child is very sensitive to sounds, textures, or touch
- Your child needs a lot of help with self-care like dressing or brushing teeth
- Your child has trouble focusing or staying calm during daily tasks
How to get it
For children with OPWDD approval, OT can be provided at home through a CHHA.
Physical Therapy (PT)
What it is
A therapy that helps children improve movement, strength, balance, and coordination.
When it may be needed
- Your child has trouble walking, running, or climbing stairs
- Your child falls often or has poor balance
- Your child has weak muscles or low energy for physical activity
